Slovak Food Recipes
Slovak food recipes have a lot in common with those of Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and Austria. In general you can say the cuisine is quite heavy and filling. The rural history of Slovakia is the main reason for this. Some History The region which is today's Slovakia to a large extent share its pre history with other Central European countries. Several cultures and tribes have come and gone. On the outskirts of the Roman empire. Invaded by Huns several times. Slavic tribes arrived in the 5th century. By the 8th century they had founded a Slavic State called The Principality of Nitra, this is by many Slovaks seen as the origin of Slovakia. Nitra was then part of Great Moravia, after its dissolution Hungary laid claim to the area. In the centuries leading up to the 20th century among others Turks, Mongols and Germans had aggresive interest in the region. Over the centuries the ethnic composition became mixed with Slavs, Germans and Hungarians over the centuries. It remained a part of Hungary until 1918 when Czechoslovakia was formed. After the Second World War it became part of the Eastern block and in reality controlled by Moscow. In 1989 ended the communist era and in 1993 the country was separated in to the Czech Republik and Slovakia. Today it is a modern state and a member of the EU.
