Lithuanian flag Lithuanian Food Recipes

Lithuanian food recipes reflect this small country's quite turbulent history. It has been around for a 1000 years, for periods as an independent sovereign state and also as dominated and controlled by Russians, Germans and Swedes. Since 1990 Lithuania, after having been part of the USSR, is again an independent nation.

Lithuanian Cuisine
The base of the cuisine is pretty similar to those of many other countries in North Europe; Beef, pork, root vegetables (in particular potatoes) and dairy products are very common ingredients. Where perhaps they differentiate themselves the most in how much wild berries and mushrooms they eat. The Asian influence is also quite strong, this perhaps due to being part of USSR for almost 50 years and thus their migratory politics. They have a German beer drinking tradition, vodka is the preferred strong spirit. The last decade international fast food culture have established themselves.
